Indians rookie Cody Anderson takes perfecto into seventh in second start
Take a look around the league with Big League Stew’s daily wrap up. We’ll hit on all of the biggest moments from the day that you may have missed, while providing highlights, photos and interesting stats.
So far, so good for Cleveland Indians rookie pitcher Cody Anderson.
Anderson, a 24-year-old who the Indians chose in the 14th round of the 2011 draft, made his second career start Monday night against the Tampa Bay Rays and if taking a perfect game into the seventh inning is good, then you can call Anderson good.
Grady Sizemore — the erstwhile Indian — broke up Anderson’s bid for perfection with a seventh-inning homer. But Anderson’s final line was just fine: eight innings, two hits, one run, no walks, two strikeouts and exactly 100 pitches in the Indians’ 7-1 win. And then there’s this:
If Anderson can face the Rays for the rest of his career, he might just be a legend. His first start came against Tampa Bay too and in that one he pitched 7.2 scoreless innings.
D-BACKS ABUSE DODGERS BULLPEN FOR 10-6 WIN
You wouldn’t believe it if you tuned in during the second half of the game, but the Los Angeles Dodgers actually were leading for a good portion of their game Monday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Dodgers were up 4-0 to start the fifth and then — ouch — bullpen carnage and things got ugly. With starting pitcher Mike Bolsinger out of the game because of an illness, the D-backs scored two runs each in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, then added four in the eighth. That came against six Dodgers relievers, only two of whom escaped without giving up a run.
The end result: a 10-6 win for Arizona and a head-scratcher for the up-and-down Dodgers, who now lead the NL West by just a half-game over the San Francisco Giants.
ASTROS BASH ROYALS
The two best teams in the American League — how weird is this about to sound? — the Kansas City Royals and Houston Astros met Monday for the start of a three-game series and Round 1 went to the bashing Astros, who triumphed 6-1.
The Astros, who have hit the most homers in baseball this season, got two more on Monday night. One from Jose Altuve and one from Chris Carter. Houston scored five runs in the first three innings to chase K.C. starter Joe Blanton from the game. Meanwhile, rookie Lance McCullers turned in another nice outing for the Astros, going seven innings, giving up four hits and one run while striking out six.
