Andre Ethier ($2,200) – When I was researching to write this article, the first guy that screamed out to me was Mr.Ethier. At his price point, he is a great value. He is facing a right-handed pitcher in Rubby De La Rosa, who he has hit well on the season. In five at-bats vs. De La Rosa, he has three hits with one home run. In addition, he’ll be playing at Chase Field, which is a hitter-friendly ballpark.
Chris Denorfia ($2,200) – Denorfia has been the classic platoon player his entire career. He likes to mash against southpaws, and today he gets the chance to face off against Jon Niese, who is notorious for getting hit hard by right-handed bats. While it is a small sample size (17 at-bats), Denorfia is batting a healthy .353 against the southpaws this year. Over the past three seasons, he is batting .284 against them. Niese, meanwhile, is a mediocre pitcher that likes to leave straight fastballs out and over the plate. Roster Denorfia so you can fit a star pitcher like Chris Sale in your lineup tonight.
David Murphy ($2,200) – While the Indians have been struggling offensively lately (excluding last night), that will not scare me from rostering one of their players. Murphy hits well against right-handed pitchers, and he gets to face Erasmo Ramirez tonight. On the year, Murphy is batting .333 to go along with four home runs and 18 RBI’s against right-handed pitchers. One risk with Murphy is the Indians tend to pinch hit for him late in games if a southpaw comes in. Less at-bats equals less opportunities for points.
Pablo Sandoval ($2,600) – For me, rostering a guy like Sandoval is a high-risk, high-reward play. The Panda has been struggling on the season, but that is only the case because he bats from the right side of the plate against southpaws, where he is batting .145 on the season. Against righties, he is batting .326 and is facing Marco Estrada, who happens to be a righty. When this guy is not on his game, he gives up deep fly balls, and in stadium like the Rogers Centre, that could easily lead to home runs for the Panda. I love Sandoval’s upside in this matchup, and I’d recommend him in tournaments. The risk that comes with rostering Sandoval is that he is only batting .222 against Estrada in nine career at-bats and he is a streaky hitter. He could easily go 0-for-4.
Marcus Semien ($2,200) – I would only consider Semien in cash tournaments because he lacks the power upside that we look for when playing in GPP’s. Semien is an interesting case because he is right-handed batter that hits for a better average against southpaws, but he has more power against righties with all six of his home runs coming against them. He is batting .284 on the year against the southpaws, and Jorge De La Rosa has trouble against right-handed batters. Semien is a decent value play given the circumstances.
