Outfielder Rankings
Dropping off: Justin Ruggiano (113th), Eric Young (117th), Kirk Nieuwenhuis (120th), Tyler Collins (122nd), David Lough (125th), Grant Green (126th), J.B. Shuck (127th), Todd Cunningham (129th), Brennan Boesch (130th)
o If Stanton had a 4-6 week ankle sprain or something, I’d probably have him in the 10-12 range in this month’s rankings. However, since his injury is a broken hamate and those are known for sapping power for months are they’ve healed, I’m dropping him down to No. 22. I also lowered some of his teammates more than I otherwise might have, since it’s going to be more difficult than ever to produce runs and RBI in Miami.
o Pillar jumps to No. 50 this month, as I underestimated just how lucrative batting in the bottom half of the Toronto order could become. Despite a .692 OPS, Pillar ranks 16th among outfielders in runs scored and 23rd in RBI.
o Dodgers manager Don Mattingly recently made it sound like Ethier had run away with the left field job during Crawford’s absence, but Ethier has hit just .182/.241/.351 in 25 games this month. One would think that’d give Crawford some sort of opening when he returns from an oblique strain in 10-14 days, but it probably depends on how Ethier hits in the meantime.
o Buxton wasn’t likely to crack the top 50 before going down with a sprained thumb that’s expected to sideline him at least a month. There shouldn’t be any assurances of him having a starting job when he returns — I don’t think he’s ready to help offensively — but given the alternatives in Minnesota, he’ll probably get another shot.
