AJ Allmendinger wins pole for Sonoma
AJ Allmendinger thinks he has a good shot at a win on Sunday at Sonoma. His qualifying attempt backed it up.
Allmendinger will start first for Sunday’s road course race. He turned the fastest lap in the second round of qualifying and will start alongside Kurt Busch.
The driver of the No. 47 won last year’s road course race at Watkins Glen to make the Chase for the first time. A win at Sonoma would likely put him in the Chase too. Allmendinger has never won at the Northern California track.
Matt Kenseth, a man not necessarily known for his road-course prowess will start third. Kyle Larson starts fourth and Jeff Gordon, the winningest driver at Sonoma, will start fifth in his final start.
Clint Bowyer, Tony Stewart, Casey Mears, David Ragan and Brad Keselowski round out the top 10. 10 different drivers have won the last 10 races at Sonoma and four of those (Busch, Gordon, Bowyer and Stewart) are in the top 10.
