Nets' Young will opt out of final year of contract
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Brooklyn Nets forward Thaddeus Young has elected to opt out of the final year of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent, according to general manager Billy King.
Young held a $10.2 million player option, but he was expected to opt out and test the market.
The Nets, who want to retain him, hold Young’s Bird Rights, enabling them to pay him more than any other team would.
Young, who turned 27 on Sunday, averaged 13.8 points per game and shot 49.5 percent from the field after being acquired by the Nets at the trade deadline from the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Kevin Garnett.
