The Eye: The best of the rest of Friday's action
The eyes of Major League Baseball were on New York Yankees icon Alex Rodriguez heading into Friday night’s action. He was sitting on 2,999 heading into a meeting with right-hander Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers at Yankee Stadium.
It didn’t take long for the historic 3,000th hit, as A-Rod took Verlander deep to right field in the bottom of the first inning.

The last time a Yankees player reached 3,000 hits? Yes, a home run in Yankee Stadium. Mr. Derek Jeter.
So A-Rod and Jeter now share that moment along with Wade Boggs as being the only three players to homer for their 3,000th hit. Quite a flair for the dramatic, this A-Rod.

Milestone watch
A-Rod’s 3,000 watch is over: All he needed was one, and Alex Rodriguez became the 29th major leaguer to accumulate 3,000 hits. He did so in style, too, as his 3,000th career hit was a home run (the 667th of his career) off Justin Verlander.
Longest active hit streak: Kris Bryant of the Cubs had hit in 14 straight, but the streak was broken. Jason Kipnis takes over with a 14-gamer now after Friday.
Nick Markakis‘s errorless streak: He set a record Thursday might with his 393rd straight game without an error, the longest streak for an outfielder in major league history. Darren Lewis used to have the record, from 1990-1994. Markakis’s previous error came Aug. 10, 2012 when he played for the Orioles. Every game from now on builds on the record. UPDATE: Add another, because he didn’t make an error on Friday.
How about this one?
five straight starts with at least 12 K for Chris Sale. Only others to do that: Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez

Angry player of the night
Orioles starter Mike Wright was chased after allowing four earned runs in just 1 1/3 inning. He was understandably unhappy.

Debut of the night
Rookie Matt Wisler — who came to the Braves via the Craig Kimbrel trade — made his MLB debut and was excellent. He allowed only one run on six hits while walking none in eight innings. He only needed 88 pitches in an efficient outing, too. Helluva game, kid.

Hard luck non-winner of the night
We already mentioned Sale. He went eight scoreless innings, allowed only two hits while walking no one and striking out 14. He left with a 1-0 lead, but the White Sox would lose 2-1, so no “W” for Sale.

Game-changer of the night
The Angels were trailing the A’s by the count of 7-2 heading into the seventh inning. They rallied to cut it to 7-5 and had the bases loaded for Albert Pujols. And then …
