Baseball Daily Dose: Is There A Way With No Wil?

Padres interim manager Pat Murphy told the media on Wednesday that outfielder Wil Myers will have surgery on Thursday to remove a bone spur in his left wrist. As a result, he is expected to be sidelined for eight weeks.
Myers had just recently returned to the team after spending a month on the disabled list due to tendinitis in his wrist. He appeared in three games between June 11-13, going 2-for-14 with two singles and a walk, before going back on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 14. Acquired as part of a three-team trade involving the Rays and Nationals last December, Myers is batting .277/.327/.459 with five home runs and 19 RBI overall.
Will Venable should see regular playing time in center field in Myers’ absence. Melvin Upton, Jr., recently activated from the disabled list, could also fit his way into the lineup more often than he would have otherwise. Venable has a .747 OPS with five home runs, 18 RBI, and five stolen bases on the year. Upton is 2-for-13 with three stolen bases thus far.
Yankees Continue to Scout Johnny Cueto
Jon Morosi of FOX Sports reported on Wednesday that the Yankees had a scout in attendance for Reds starter Johnny Cueto’s start for a second consecutive game. Morosi reported on Sunday that the Yankees and Tigers had scouts watch Cueto during his start against the Cubs two days prior.
Cueto tossed five shutout innings against the Tigers on Wednesday before he was victimized by Miguel Cabrera for a three-run home run in the sixth inning, just before the game entered a rain delay. Cueto entered the start 4-4 with a 2.85 ERA with an 82/14 K/BB ratio over 85 1/3 innings. Last year, he led the league with 243 2/3 innings pitched and 242 strikeouts while finishing with a stellar 2.25 ERA, resulting in a runner-up finish in NL Cy Young Award balloting.
Cueto, 29, is eligible for free agency after the season. The 29-35 Reds are expected to make Cueto available leading up to the July 31 trade deadline. Moving to a contender would help his fantasy value simply because he’d be more likely to wind up with a win. Additionally, he would likely end up in a less hitter-friendly ballpark than the Great American Ball Park, which is the third-most homer-happy stadium in baseball according to ESPN.
Daniel Murphy to Return Tuesday
Mets infielder Daniel Murphy is expected to be activated from the disabled list on Tuesday. The 30-year-old has been sidelined since June 5 due to a strained right quadriceps. It’ll be a boon for the Mets, who have survived injuries to Murphy and David Wright with a patchwork infield. Murphy was batting a reasonably productive .283/.335/.414 with four home runs and 29 RBI on the season prior to hitting the DL.
Murphy has mostly played second base this season, but has also started 13 games at third base. Without Murphy and Wright, the Mets have relied on Ruben Tejada and Eric Campbell at third base. At second base, they’ve used Dilson Herrera and Tejada.
