Assistant coach Alvin Gentry dunks at Warriors practice, is 60 years old
It’s no surprise that many NBA stars remain their athleticism deep into their lives. A person like MIchael Jordan is not built like the rest of us — he will get less springy as time goes on, but he will still dunk at 50 years old. My athletic peak, on the other hand, involved chipping in from the grass during a round of miniature golf (with the putter, though!).
Longtime coach Alvin Gentry did not play in the NBA, although he did letter at Appalachian State and appears to keep himself in excellent physical condition. Nevertheless, the current Golden Warriors associate head coach and soon-to-be New Orleans Pelicans head coach can still dunk at 60. Even if he needs some help from a padded wall to do it (via SB Nation):
The dunk, posted by Warriors player development coach Jarron Collins from Monday’s practice ahead of a potentially title-winning NBA Finals Game 6 against the Cleveland Cavaliers, certainly seems to have helped the team stay loose ahead of a big game. Although there’s no way to know how tight Gentry will feel on Tuesday morning.
No matter how much help he got from the wall, Gentry’s slam is pretty darn impressive for a guy who would be nearing retirement in most other professions. Perhaps he’ll ingratiate himself to his new Pelicans players by throwing down a 360 windmill.
