5 San Diego State players suspended for six games each
San Diego State has suspended five players for half of the regular season.
Cornerback Derek Babiash, offensive lineman Darrell Green, linebacker Fred Melifonwu, cornerback BIlly Vaughn Jr. and fullback Parker Wells were all suspended for six games for a violation of team rules. The violation is unspecified.
“Stuff like this seems to happen from time to time,” Long said via the San Diego Union Tribune. “It’s a disappointing deal. These are young people who make mistakes and you have to discipline them.”
Four of the five players are backups. Greene was projected to be a starter at right guard in 2015, so the team will be looking to figure out a replacement in the starting lineup for the first half of the season. He’s a two-year starter and was one of three returning starters on the line. Running back Donnel Pumphrey ran for 1,755 yards and 19 touchdowns in 2014.
Vaughn had 16 tackles and an interception in 2014. Melifonwu had five tackles.
San Diego State is considered one of the favorites in the West division of the Mountain West Conference. The suspended players will miss MWC games against Fresno State and Hawaii.
