Phil Mickelson made special girl’s day after his Sunday round in Memphis
Phil Mickelson finished the FedEx St. Jude Classic on an outstanding note on Sunday.
First, Mickelson drained a 25-foot birdie putt to close out a 5-under 65 at TPC Southwind that left him in a tie for third place. Then, he did something more important.
Mickelson walked over to a little girl affiliated with Memphis’ St. Jude Children’s Hospital who was the honorary flag bearer on the final hole. He gave the girl his ball from the round and a signed glove. Mickelson’s caddie, Jim Mackay, gave his caddie bib to the girl and put it on her before Mickelson signed it.
Perhaps most important, Mickelson then took a few seconds to give some words of encouragement to the girl.
“We’re wishing you the best of luck, you know that?” Mickelson said. “You’ve got a lot of people pulling for you.”
It was a great gesture by Mickelson. Maybe karma will pay him off with a U.S. Open victory next week.
