Detroit defeated Cleveland 4-0 on a shutout by P David Price yesterday. The Tigers are 2-1 on their homestand, 4-1 in their last 5 and 4-6 in their past 10 games. The Indians are 0-1 on their road trip and 3-6 in their last 9 games.
Detroit leads the season series 6-1 and has a commanding 9-1 lead in the last 10 encounters between these AL Central rivals.
Carrasco was a 7-3 loser to Baltimore in his last start. He allowed 5 runs in 4 innings, one of his worst starts on the year. He has 5 Q starts on the season and has received a decision in all 12 of his starts.
Verlander picked a tough opponent to make his 2015 debut against as several Indians have had a lot of success against him in the past. OF Brandon Moss is 4-11 (.364) with 2 HRs and 3 RBIs while C Yan Gomes is 6-16 (.375) with an RBI against the veteran right-hander. Some more stats – OF Michael Bourn is 12-33 (.364) with 4 RBIs and 4 steals; OF Michael Brantley is 18-54 (.333) with 8 RBIs and 5 SBs; IB Carlos Santana is hitting only .205 vs. Verlander but has hit 5 HRs. 2B Jason Kipnis and SS Mike Aviles haven’t been as fortunate as some of their teammates as they are a combined 9-60 (.150).
For Detroit, 1B Miguel Cabrera is 8-21 (.381) against Carrasco with a HR, 2 RBIs and a stolen base. 2B Ian Kinsler is 7-19 (.368) with 3 RBIs and a SB while OF J.D. Martinez is 4-13 (.308) with a HR and 4 RBIs vs. the veteran right-hander.

The Tigers have had their way with Indians’ starter Carlos Carrasco with the 2015 roster hitting a lifetime .330 with an .879 OPS. Carrasco has been a decent 4-2 with a 3.58 ERA on the road this season, but overall he has struggled in day games with a 5.92 ERA. Justin Verlander is coming off of rehab for his first MLB start in 2015 so we don’t know what to expect conditioning wise. What we do know is that he didn’t dominate Cleveland last season with just one quality start in 5 outings. The current trend in this series is to the over with five of the seven games going over the closing total line. We expect more of the same today.
