Andrew McCutchen knocked the cover off a baseball in batting practice
As we’ve learned over the years, Andrew McCutchen is a kind and gentle person off the field and especially when dealing with fans.
Of course, we’ve also learned that McCutchen is anything but kind or gentle when he steps in the batter’s box.
In there, it’s all about business. The 2013 National League MVP shows no mercy when it’s time to take his mighty cuts, and that includes his time in the batting cage before every game.
For evidence, just look at this baseball, which had the unfortunate occurrence of meeting McCutchen’s bat during batting practice prior to Friday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies at PNC Park.
McCutchen went all Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez from the baseball classic “The Sandlot,” by literally knocking the baseball’s cover off and leaving it a shell of its former self.

Now just imagine if McCutchen had done this during a game as Martin Maldonado of the Milwaukee Brewers actually did last season. It would have added yet another layer to McCutchen’s already impressive legacy.
As it is, the visual is quite stunning. It’s another reminder that while McCutchen isn’t the most imposing figure on a baseball field, he’s plenty strong and has enough pop in his bat to hit 25-30 home runs every season. Over the past four, he’s averaged 25. .
We’ve never seen McCutchen’s power on display quite like this before, but he’s always on that short list of guys we wouldn’t mind seeing in the Home Run derby.
