Maryland approves plan to sell beer at sporting events
Maryland wants to start to sell beer at football games in 2015.
The school has approved a plan that allows alcohol sales at all sporting events, though it won’t include hard liquor or wine right away. And it still officially needs county approval.
For the 2015-2016 school year, a trial period as the school is calling it, beer would be the only beverage available and people can buy one at a time. If the sales are deemed successful, then wine will be added starting in 2016 and people can buy two drinks at a time. We wonder if there would be any negative reaction from Maryland fans against the preliminary one-drink rule.
According to the Baltimore Sun, campus reaction to the possibility of alcohol sales was mixed. While students were favoring the proposal, others weren’t, including the directors of a state-funded college alcohol committee. The county is also not exactly fond of the idea, either. However, it will have a full hearing later in the summer and could still be approved.
“We told them we didn’t think it was a good idea,” Charles W. Caldwell III, chairman of the county’s Board of License Commissioners, said Wednesday of being briefed recently on the plan. “I don’t think they paid any attention to us.”
The university said it will not have alcohol sales located near the student section at Byrd Stadium. Sales would be cut off before the fourth quarter.
The University of Texas may add alcohol sales to football games soon after the school’s new president endorsed the idea. Alcohol is available at other sporting events. Minnesota added beer sales in 2012 at the new TCF Bank Stadium and lost money in the first year.
