Auburn to reportedly replace one of new Toomer’s Corner trees
One of the new trees at Toomer’s Corner in Auburn needs to be replaced.
The trees were planted in February. According the the Auburn Plainsman, the tree on Magnolia Avenue will be replaced next month.
An Auburn horticulturalist told Al.com in April that the tree was in transplant shock and the school was working to help the tree regenerate new roots. Both trees were transplanted at 35-feet tall; they weren’t planted as saplings. Auburn wanted larger trees so students could continue the tradition of rolling them with toilet paper after big wins as soon as possible.
The oak trees were replacement trees for the ones killed by Harvey Updyke. After Auburn beat Alabama in the 2010 season Updyke poisoned the iconic trees on the Auburn campus. Updyke served six months in prison for the crime — after he called in to confess on the Paul Finebaum show, of course — and was released in 2013.
Auburn announced in August of 2014 that clones of the poisoned trees were available for purchase.
