Jason Vargas took a liner to the groin, his manager made a good joke about it
This play hurt in more ways than one.
Kansas City Royals pitcher Jason Vargas took a line drive to the groin Monday night, off the bat of Aaron Hicks of the Minnesota Twins. Vargas was able to compose himself enough to grab the baseball and throw it to first for the out. Bravo, that’s some fortitude.
Vargas was obviously shaken up afterward (as anybody would in the same situation), but stayed in the game. He finished that inning and another, leaving with six shutout innings in the Royals’ 3-1 win.
After the game, Vargas’ shot to the groin was fodder for jokes from his manager, Ned Yost, who told MLB.com’s Jeffrey Flanagan:
Good one, Ned. But of course, Vargas did pick up the correct ball, so he’s the one with bragging rights here.
