The Cam Newton contract raises the stakes for the Seahawks and quarterback Russell Wilson. Regardless of whether Wilson would take the same deal right now (I think he wouldn’t) or whether the Seahawks would pay the same deal right now (I think they wouldn’t), the real question is whether Wilson will play out the final year of his rookie contract at $1.5 million and, if so, how much he’ll be able to command in 2016.

The dance between team and player continues with agent Mark Rodgers, a baseball agent, sending a 16-page letter to the Seahawks explaining his position, as initially reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.

PFT has confirmed that the letter was sent. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Rodgers routinely creates “position papers” in all larger baseball negotiations. And while Rodgers isn’t looking to start a war with the Seahawks, he needs to advocate for Wilson.

Wilson eventually needs to decide whether to capitalize on leverage that only will grow with the passage of time — or to leave money on the table in order to allow the team to put a competitive team around him. Regardless, his best-case scenario will only get better and better as February 2016 approaches, with the Seahawks or someone else will pay him as much he wants.
