Sports shorts: Missouri picks up three football commitments – STLtoday.com
The Missouri football team picked up three oral commitments over the weekend.
Late Saturday night, Bryce Banks, a defensive back from Rock Bridge High in Columbia, Mo., announced his decision on Twitter. His teammate, Rock Bridge defensive end Tre Williams, committed Friday while attending Mizzou’s team camp in Columbia.
Also on Saturday, Christian Holmes, a defensive back from the Atlanta area, committed to MU, he confirmed. Listed at 6-3, 190 pounds, Banks is rated a two-star prospect by Rivals.com and also holds offers from Illinois and a handful of teams from outside the power-five conferences, including Tulsa, Wyoming, Bowling Green and Western Michigan.
Holmes, listed at 6-1, 182, from McNair High School, has mostly collected offers from FCS programs or schools outside the power five conferences. Missouri has seven commitments for 2016. Oral pledges are non-binding until recruits sign national letters of intent in February. (Dave Matter)
Kennaugh wins Criterium du Dauphine first stage • British rider Peter Kennaugh won the first stage of the Criterium du Dauphine race after launching a late attack Sunday.
Kennaugh was in a small group of riders about two kilometers from the end when he made his move.
The Team Sky rider timed it just right and crossed the line two seconds ahead of Italian rider Sacha Modolo and Norway’s Edvald Boasson Hagen.
Kennaugh completed the 81.5-mile flat trek from Ugine to Albertville, France in 3 hours, 6 minutes, 51 seconds.
The week-long stage race is a warm up for the Tour de France, which starts next month, and defending Tour champion Vincenzo Nibali is among the leading contenders. (AP)
Wiggins breaks cycling hour record • Former Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins has broken cycling’s prestigious hour record, covering 54.526 kilometers (33.88 miles) in 60 minutes at the velodrome in London’s Olympic Park.
In front of a raucous sell-out crowd, Wiggins smashed the record set just last month by fellow Englishman Alex Dowsett, who managed 52.937 kilometers (32.89 miles). (AP)
American Pharoah quietly returns home • Triple Crown champion American Pharoah quietly returned home to Churchill Downs as he prepared for boisterous celebrations 37 years in the making.
Less than 24 hours after winning the Belmont Stakes to become the 12th Triple Crown winner and first since 1978, the bay colt received the VIP treatment upon his return to Louisville. Police escorted American Pharoah’s transport van from the adjacent airport to trainer Bob Baffert’s Barn 33, and the horse was cheered like a rock star by hundreds of fans as his entrance was broadcast over the jumbo screen overlooking the storied track.
The energy figures to ratchet up for the horse, whose display in the track’s Kentucky Derby museum was updated to reflect his historic achievement. Churchill Downs’ famous twin spires will display Zayat Stables’ turquoise-and-gold colors all week. (AP)
IOC withdraws recognition, funding for SportAccord • The IOC withdrew its recognition and funding for SportAccord and called on international federations to reshape the umbrella body, which has been torn apart by Marius Vizer’s attack on Olympic leaders.
On the first day of a two-day meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, the IOC executive board also reviewed the corruption crisis swirling around FIFA and prepared to make a decision on adding new events for the 2018 Winter Games, including Big Air in snowboarding and freestyle skiing.
The board, chaired by IOC President Thomas Bach, called for a complete restructuring of SportAccord, which had represented Olympic and non-Olympic federations.
More than two dozen federations have withdrawn or suspended ties with SportAccord since Vizer, its president since 2013, blasted the IOC and Bach in a speech in Sochi, Russia, in April. Among other things, Vizer called the IOC system “expired, outdated, wrong, unfair and not at all transparent” and said Bach’s “Olympic Agenda 2020” reform program was of little use to the federations.
Vizer resigned as president a week ago, leaving SportAccord’s future in doubt. (AP)
