Linebacker Brandon Spikes cut by Patriots after strange car accident
The New England Patriots woke up on Monday morning and apparently didn’t want to deal with whatever linebacker Brandon Spikes had gotten himself into.
A day after news broke that Spikes’ car was found crashed and abandoned, the Patriots cut the veteran linebacker. Spikes had been looking for a job when the Patriots, whom he was with from 2010-13, signed him on May 18. Spikes, who was with the Buffalo Bills last season, probably won’t find an easier time finding a new team this time around.
At 3:20 a.m. on Sunday, police were notified of an abandoned car on the median of Interstate 495, the Boston Globe reported. The on-board navigation system reported that the driver of the 2011 Mercedes-Benz Maybach, which is registered to Spikes, said he hit a deer. State police said there was no evidence of a deer near the car.
At about the same time on the same stretch of highway, another car was rear ended, although the passengers of that car didn’t see the car that hit their vehicle, the Globe said.
Police hadn’t established that the Mercedes rear ended the other car or who was driving the car registered to Spikes.
The Patriots obviously didn’t like Spikes’ explanation or didn’t care. Spikes is no longer with the team, though he’ll keep his $25,000 signing bonus. But Spikes might be busy for a while answering questions from the police.
