White Sox drop one in extras despite Carlos Rodon’s strong start
Take a look around the league with Big League Stew’s daily wrap up. We’ll hit on all of the biggest moments from the day that you may have missed, while providing highlights, photos and interesting stats.
Chicago White Sox pitcher Carlos Rodon turned in arguably the finest start of his young career Thursday against the Texas Rangers, but left with nothing to show for it.
Rodon was fantastic over six innings, allowing just one run and striking out 10 batters. He had some issues with his control, walking three, but was otherwise strong during the start. The White Sox bats, however, failed to hold up their end of the bargain.
Chicago was shut down by Yovani Gallardo over six innings. The club managed to squeak out one run against Gallardo, but it wound up being unearned.
The two teams would remain tied at one, and would have to go to extra innings. Despite their strong starts, neither Gallardo nor Rodon would come away with a victory.
The Rangers would, though. In the bottom of the 11th, Texas came through. White Sox reliever Dan Jennings gave up a leadoff single, and then intentionally walked Delino DeShields with one out.
That set the stage for Shin-Soo Choo. Though the White Sox had the lefty on lefty matchup they desired, Choo managed to come through. He knocked a walk-off single to left, scoring Leonis Martin and giving the Rangers the 2-1 win.
MARINERS CAN’T END LOSING STREAK
The Seattle Mariners dropped their sixth-straight game Thursday against the Tampa Bay Rays. Though Seattle came close, the team still lost the contest 2-1.
The game marked the Seattle debut of Mark Trumbo. He would single twice during the game, but struck out in his other two plate appearances.
Though Seattle scored just one run, the club actually out hit the Rays 10-6. Seattle failed to get the job done in scoring situations, leaving 20 runners on base.
With the loss, the Mariners dropped to 24-30 on the season. They now sit in fourth place in the American League West.
WACHA DOES IT AGAIN
It doesn’t matter which team he faces, St. Louis Cardinals starter Michael Wacha continues to look like an ace. That continued during a 7-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday.
Though the Dodgers entered the game with the best offense in the game according to wRC+, Wacha kept them off balance all night.
The 23-year-old allowed one run on seven hits over seven strong innings. He struck out five and did not issue a walk during the contest.
With the victory, Wacha improved to 8-1 on the season. He lowered his ERA to 2.18 with the outing. The Cardinals haven’t missed a beat without Adam Wainwright, and Wacha has been a big part of that.

Amazingly, the team is on pace to win 108 games despite its early injuries.
At 36-18, the Cardinals currently hold a 6.5 game lead in the National League Central.
MINNESOTA CONTINUES TO FIND A WAY
The Minnesota Twins pulled out another improbable victory Thursday against the Boston Red Sox. A late rally cued by defensive miscues led the club to an 8-4 win.
Minnesota’s magic started working in the ninth inning. With Red Sox closer Koji Uehara on the mound, the Twins went to work.
Uehara allowed two straight singles to open the frame, immediately putting a man in scoring position. Joe Mauer opted to bunt both players over, but reached on a Pablo Sandoval error. One run scored, giving the Twins the 5-4 lead.
Apparently, that wasn’t enough. A Trevor Plouffe single brought in another run, ending Uehara’s day. Craig Breslow was able to induce a pop out for the inning’s first out, but couldn’t keep it up.
Eduardo Escobar doubled in another run, taking the score to 7-4. After an intentional walk to Kurt Suzuki, Shane Robinson hit a sac fly. Breslow was able to pick up the final out, but not before the Twins had scored four during the frame.
Glen Perkins would toss a perfect inning in the ninth, securing the 8-4 victory. With the win, the Twins improved to 32-21 and lead the American League Central.
