W. Kentucky and former UAB safety Greg Maclin dies in car crash
Former UAB and current Western Kentucky safety Greg Maclin died in a car crash in Alabama on Thursday. He was 19.
According to Al.com, Maclin was a passenger in a Dodge Charger involved in an accident at approximately 3:30 a.m. on I-565 in Huntsville. The car crashed into two other vehicles and Maclin was the only one involved in the accident with life-threatening injuries.
Maclin had transferred to Western Kentucky following the shutdown of the UAB football program in December. He was one of many players who transferred after learning the news of the program’s demise because of budget concerns.
UAB football was revived earlier this week and will resume play in the future as a member of Conference-USA. Players who transferred after the program’s temporary shutdown are immediately eligible in 2015.
Maclin had 15 tackles in 12 games for UAB in 2014. The Blazers went 6-6 and didn’t go to a bowl game as the rumors about the program swirled. Maclin was a native of Tanner, Alabama and was a two-star prospect in the class of 2013.
“We were deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of Greg Maclin who wasinvolved in a tragic car accident late Wednesday night,” UAB coach Bill Clark said in a statement. “As we’ve seen, the UAB football family is strong, and Greg was a part of that family. Our thoughts and prayers are with Greg’s family and those close to him during this difficult time.”
