Miami Dolphins first-round pick DeVante Parker has foot surgery
Early reports say that the foot surgery DeVante Parker had won’t keep the first-round pick out of the season opener for the Miami Dolphins.
So it’s not bad news. But it can’t be considered great news either.
Chris Perkins of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel was one of many to report that Parker should be ready for the season opener. Still, Parker will likely miss most of the offseason, time that would have been used learning the Dolphins offense and transitioning to the NFL. As the 14th pick, the Dolphins clearly want him to play a role right away.

It’s also worrisome that it is his second foot surgery in less than a year. He broke his foot last August while at Louisville. This surgery was to replace a screw that was inserted then, NFL Network’s Albert Breer said. The Miami Herald said it was a precaution; he would have played if there was a regular season game this week. The Herald said this was done to make sure the issue doesn’t linger long term.
It’s not a rule that injuries before the season will set a rookie receiver back. Odell Beckham battled a hamstring injury last year with the New York Giants, and he was just fine once he returned. But it’s certainly not ideal for a rookie.
It could have been worse, however. For now it’s best to just assume everything will be OK with Parker and he’ll be in the lineup Week 1.
