A graduate transfer, Lambert has two years of eligibility remaining.
Richt confirmed earlier in the week that the team was recruiting Lambert. Hutson Mason, who replaced Aaron Murray as the team’s starter, was a senior in 2014. Brice Ramsey, Faton Bauta and Jacob Park competed to be Georgia’s starter over the spring an no official starter had been named. Given the transfer, Lambert likely has a good chance to start in 2015.
Lambert, a Georgia native, announced he was leaving Virginia in May after he graduated. He started nine games in 2014, though he fell behind Matt Johns on the depth chart. Lambert threw for 1,972 yards, 10 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
While the Bulldogs will have a third different starting quarterback in three years, there will also be a new offensive system. Former St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer replaces Mike Bobo, who became the head coach at Colorado State. If Schottenheimer’s offensive scheme with the Rams is any indication, accuracy on short passes is going to be a must for the winner of Georgia’s quarterback competition.
Schottenheimer said Wednesday that the team’s (successful) recruitment of Lambert was because they wanted to create competition. From UGASports.com:
“It (the fact Georgia is recruiting Lambert) speaks to the fact that we’re trying to create competition. Again, you’re talking to a guy who has played the last two years in the NFC West with two and three different quarterbacks a year. Unfortunately, injuries are part of the process,” Schottenheimer said. “But it doesn’t matter if it is quarterback, it doesn’t matter if it’s offensive line, we’re trying to create competition. We think that leads to guys raising their level of play, raising their standards so that’s what we’re trying to do.
