According to the Roanoke Times, he was granted his release from his scholarship two weeks ago. He came close to playing in 2014 at the end of the season as he was the third string quarterback. Starting QB Michael Brewer had a knee injury against Virginia and Brenden Motley suffered a concussion. Brewer returned to the game.
Ford entered the season as the No. 4 quarterback but was elevated to No. 3 when Mark Leal, who was competing for the starting job with Brewer at the beginning of the season, left the program.
Ford was the 2013 Gatorade Player of the Year in Pennsylvania and a three-star recruit according to Rivals. He was likely going to battle Dwayne Lawson for the No. 3 quarterback job in fall camp. Lawson, an incoming freshman, is a four-star quarterback in the class of 2015 according to Rivals and was listed as the No. 7 dual-threat quarterback in the country.
