Rockies’ David Dahl opts to have spleen removed for quicker return
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11:59 am ET) Rockies outfield prospect David Dahl, who was involved in a violent on-field collision Thursday while playing for Double-A New Britain, has elected to have his spleen removed, his agents announced on Twitter on Sunday night. Dahl had surgery last week to repair a lacerated spleen.
His agents at Sosnick Cobbe & Karon said having his spleen removed will allow him to return this season instead of next year. However, they also mentioned “it brings other challenges” as well.
Dahl was hurt in Thursday’s game when he was chasing down a fly ball in center field. Shortstop Trevor Story and second baseman Juan Ciriaco also went after the play, but while Story pulled up, Ciriaco did not. He struck Dahl in the head and torso area with his knee, per MiLB.com. Dahl stayed on the ground following the collision, but walked off under his own power.
The 2012 first-round pick is considered a top-100 prospect by Baseball America (No. 22) and MLB.com (No. 59).
