Jeffrey Maier’s glove from 1996 ALCS up for auction
Jeffrey Maier’s glove used to corral Derek Jeter’s infamous home run in Game 1 of the 1996 ALCS between the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles can be yours, if you’re willing to pay a hefty price.
The Associated Press reports that the glove is going up for auction on Feb. 21 at Heritage Auction in New York. It’s already up for bidding online though, and as of Monday night the leading bid was a cool $13,000.
If you need any more incentive to make an offer, here’s part of the description from the online posting:
Presented is the black leather Mizuno glove that hauled in perhaps the most consequential home run of the modern Yankee dynasty and made a household name of its owner. Solid sandlot use is evident throughout, with “Maier” printed in child-like block lettering on the wrist.
Maier, whose name will still make many New Yorkers snicker and unleash of a torrent of curses from any proud Baltimore native, was 12 at the time of the incident. The Jeter homer, that would have been caught by Orioles right fielder Tony Tarasco if not for Maier’s interference, tied the game in the eighth inning. The Yankees would go on to win the game in extra innings, the series in five games, and then the World Series.
The glove’s current owner is not known, although it is said that person purchased it directly from Maier a few years ago. The auction house values the item at $50,000, so if you’ve got that kind of cash laying around there’s nothing stopping you from adding the glove to your own personal collection.
