Chicago’s Jackie Robinson West Little League baseball team hired a high-profile attorney, Victor Henderson, to conduct an investigation that could help bring back the US national title to the South Side, reports the Associated Press.
On Wednesday, Jackie Robinson West vacated its wins from the 2014 Little League World Series for using ineligible players outside of the team’s district zone. Their manager Darold Butler was also suspended from Little League activity moving forward.
“We aren’t raising the race card, at least the family isn’t,” Henderson said during Thursday’s press conference.
Family members of the team, along with the players attended the press conference. Outside of his statement, Haley, the suspended manager, refused to answer any questions from the media.
“Clearly, we have one more battle,” Haley said. “You were not wrong for sticking with our boys then (during the Little League World Series), and you are not wrong for sticking with our boys now.”
Reverend Jesse Jackson also held a press conference of his own the previous day to express outrage over the team vacating wins from its 2014 Little League World Series, calling the punishment “too harsh.” At this point, Henderson said he’s unsure if the team will file a lawsuit against Little League International.
“I want to make sure that whatever rules and regulations are being applied to Jackie Robinson West are being applied to any other team,” Henderson said.
