Report: Derek Jeter thought about buying the Buffalo Bills
We know Derek Jeter wants to own an MLB team one day — because, frankly, that’s more his speed than coaching. But Jeter’s ownership interests reportedly extend beyond the diamond, to the NFL.
Tim Graham of the Buffalo News reports that Jeter explored the possibility of buying the Buffalo Bills when they were up for sale last year. Terry and Kim Pegula were the eventual buyers, shelling out a record $1.4 billion. Jeter never got that far into the picture, Graham writes:
Two sources have informed me that Jeter, while playing his farewell season with the Yankees, explored purchasing the Bills when they were for sale last year.
Uncertain is whether Jeter wanted to lead a group or be a minority partner. But given the Bills eventual, record-breaking sale price of $1.4 billion, he likely would have needed to settle for shareholder status.
The Pegulas were not aware of Jeter’s prior interest, have not been approached by Jeter and have not considered selling a portion of their team to him, a highly placed Bills source said.
Jeter’s post-baseball career plan can be summed up in exactly one word: mogul. He’s not trying to linger around the baseball field or be an analyst. He’s much of the watch-from-the-luxury box type, which is why ownership perfect. There were even whispers recently, when he toured Marlins Park, that Jeter might be taking his bank balance to South Beach.
He’s already launched a book publishing company and started a website, The Players Tribune, where athletes tell their own stories. He’ll also be part of the upcoming “Saturday Night Live” 40th anniversary special. That’s what level Jeter is on.
So we’ll wait for the day that Jeter makes his way to the owner’s box — whether its in the MLB or NFL — and fans can yell “Yeah, Jeets!” at him from the stands. Though, it’s a shame we don’t get to see Jeter and new Bills coach Rex Ryan buddy up. What a pair they’d be.
