Raiders’ Tuck: LB Khalil Mack capable of being an L.T.-type player
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10:32 am ET) Raiders linebacker Khalil Mack, who was the fifth pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, had a pretty solid rookie season, totaling 75 tackles (59 solo), four sacks and three pass defenses in 16 games. He finished third in the voting for Defensive Rookie of the Year behind Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald and Ravens inside linebacker C.J. Mosley.
Mack’s NFL career is off to a promising start, but if you ask teammate Justin Tuck about the 6-3, 252-pound linebacker, he sets some pretty lofty expectations.
“I’ve watched a lot of film on guys like Derrick Thomas, Lawrence Taylor … I’m not saying that he will be that player, I’m saying he’s capable of being that player,” Tuck said last week during Super Bowl festivities, per ESPN. “Believe me, I know what praise I just gave him. I know what category I just potentially put him into. The thing I love about him that people don’t get to see every day is not the fact that he’s an absolute physical specimen. It’s not that. It’s that he’s smart, he understands the game, but he also understands that he doesn’t know it all.”

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(2/2/2015) Chargers center Nick Hardwick is planning to announce his retirement from football on Tuesday, according to UTSanDiego.com.
“I’m nervous about tomorrow just because it’s so final,” Hardwick said Monday. “To declare your intentions publicly and vocally, it’s so final. But I’m also really excited. It’s going to be a really good celebration of a fabulous career. I’ve had a lot of fun, and I learned a lot. That’s where I am now, reflecting what I took from it.”
Hardwick suffered a neck injury in the first game of the season and was contemplating retirement before the 2014 season began. The 33-year-old made 136 starts in his career.
“I got a fast track to life on a professional and personal development course,” Hardwick said. “I feel like I have the wisdom of a 60-year-old in a 33-year-old’s body, and I’m so thankful for that. Everything is so elevated in football. The highs are so high, and the lows are so low. … It’s a big soul-searching journey. I’m really thankful that I guess I found the sport, and the sport found me.”

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/2/2015) Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman passed a concussion test during the Super Bowl on Sunday, allowing him to continue to play, a source told the Associated Press. Edelman appeared groggy after he was leveled by Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor after a 21-yard completion with just under 11 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
After the offensive series ended, Edelman was checked on the New England sideline by medical staff and an independent neurologist and cleared to return, the source said.
Following the 28-24 win, Edelman said, “We’re not allowed to talk about injuries.” Coach Bill Belichick also chose to dance around the topic Monday.
“I’m a coach, and I had a deal with our trainers and doctors,” he told reporters during a press conference Monday. “They’re the medical experts and they don’t call plays, and I’m the coach and I don’t get involved in the medical part. When they clear players to play, then if we want to play them we play them. The plays we call, I don’t have to get approval from them. It’s a good setup.”
