Diamondbacks prospect flips over fence for flippin' awesome catch
Some catches are awesome, but few are literally flippin’ awesome. Minor league outfielder Luis Veras, Arizona Diamondbacks prospect currently playing for the Hillsboro Hops, gave his all to make a stupendous catch on Sunday, and took little tumble to do it.
It was the top of the first inning of the Hops’ game against the Spokane Indians, and the Hops needed one more out to move to the bottom of the inning. Seth Spivey, Spokane’s catcher, was at the plate. He yanked a ball toward foul territory in left field, and it looked like it was going to be over the fence and out of reach for left fielder Veras.
But Veras didn’t think so. He zipped over toward the fence, jumped up, and caught the ball in midair. When he made the catch, the top of the fence was at his waist, and he just kept on going. He flipped over the fence, his feet going all the way over his head, but he held on to the ball for the out. Here’s a delightful gif, via Cut4:
I feel a little bad for the kid who ran up there hoping to take home a souvenir. But when Luis Veras is in left field, no balls shall escape!

That catch isn’t the only great thing that Veras did on Sunday. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Veras hit a single to break up Spokane’s no-hitter. The Hops would score two runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to win the game 6-2. The Hops are Class-A short season, so Veras still has a ways to go before he reaches the majors, but clearly he’s already learned how to give his all to make a catch.
