The 49ers quarterback depth chart looks like a 2011 scouting report gone horribly wrong. Blaine Gabbert starting, Christian Ponder backing him up and Colin Kaepernick lingering as a guy who could be a factor but is still very much up in the air.

Here’s the good news: Chip Kelly said Kaepernick was “fine” during a conference call with local reporters after the 49ers beat the Broncos in Week 2 of the preseason.

“I think Kaep is fine. I saw Kaep. He’s fine,” Kelly said. “He’s going to throw some more … In actual practice? I think. Yes.”

What kind of practice? Very much TBD.

“I don’t know that [he will play 7-on-7],” Kelly said. “We’ll see it once we get out there and how it goes.”

Kaepernick being “fine” actually rings true — according to reporters on the scene before the Denver preseason game, including Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area, Kaep was throwing some deep balls out on the field.

All of this is extremely weird.

Kaepernick hasn’t played at all yet. He isn’t practicing. He’s doing some light throwing. If he’s fine does he still have a dead arm (or tired arm or however the team wants to classify his arm)?

The issue is that if Kaepernick isn’t practicing fully by the time the third preseason game rolls around, he’s probably not going to get a shot to win the starting 49ers job.

Kelly’s offense looked pretty good in the first week of the preseason, but if we’re talking about this offense without mentioning that Kaepernick isn’t even getting a shot at winning the starting job, it feels a little disingenuous.

Maybe keeping him on the sideline through the majority of the preseason was the plan all along.
