Report says Patriots RB Dion Lewis needs another knee surgery
Dion Lewis’ injury has been somewhat of a mystery, like most things surrounding the New England Patriots.
There’s a reason there hasn’t been much positive news about Lewis this month: He reportedly needs another knee surgery.
Jim McBride of the Boston Globe said Lewis, who hasn’t practiced in training camp, needs a second knee surgery. He was coming back off a torn ACL, which he suffered last November. There seemed to be optimism he wouldn’t start the regular season on the physically-unable-to-perform list, but now it seems he’ll miss at least a good part of the season. Tom Curran of CSN New England said the second surgery doesn’t involve Lewis’ ACL but he’ll have an eight-to-10 week recovery time.
It’s a blow to the Patriots offense, because Lewis was a key part of it last season when he was healthy, as a dangerous weapon out of the backfield in the passing game. He had 36 receptions for 388 yards with four total touchdowns in seven games. But Lewis has rarely been healthy in his NFL career. He has played just seven games since 2012, all of which came last season with the Patriots.
The Patriots will be without quarterback Tom Brady for the first four games this season. He is suspended. McBride also tweeted that tackle Sebastian Vollmer is likely headed to injured reserve with what Curran said was a hip injury. That’s a big blow to the offensive line, and not the only one. Guard Shaq Mason, who started 10 games last year, has a broken hand and his timetable to return is uncertain according to McBride. And the Lewis injury is another big loss.
It will be a challenge for the Patriots offense early this season.
