Highly touted prospect Vesey picks Rangers over Bruins, other teams
The New York Rangers have won the Jimmy Vesey sweepstakes.
Vesey was the Hobey Baker Award winner as the NCAA’s player of the year last season for Harvard. The 23-year-old forward had 24 goals and 22 assists in 33 games.
Originally drafted by the Nashville Predators in the third round of the 2012 draft, Vesey said he wouldn’t sign by the Aug. 15 deadline. The Predators traded his rights to the Buffalo Sabres for a third-round pick in the 2016 draft.
Vesey was sought by several teams – among them, Boston – and ultimately chose the Rangers.
• Calgary Flames forward Sean Monahan signed a seven-year contract extension worth a reported $44.6 million.
BASKETBALL
NBA: The league will hold the 2017 All-Star Game in New Orleans after taking the midseason event out of North Carolina because of a state law that limits anti-discrimination protections for lesbian, gay and transgender people.
BASEBALL
LITTLE LEAGUE: Loreto Siniscalchi struck out 13 in 52/3 innings and Canada upset Tokyo 10-4 to snap Japan’s 23-game opening-round winning streak in the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
TENNIS
WESTERN & SOUTHERN OPEN: Angelique Kerber advanced to the semifinals, staying on track to overtake Serena Williams at No. 1, overcoming a sloppy first set and beating Carla Suarez Navarro 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 in Mason, Ohio.
GOLF
PGA: Si Woo Kim and Lucas Glover had putts for 59 on another low-scoring day in the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Kim’s 12-under 128 total gives him a two-shot advantage over Glover and three others in the PGA Tour’s regular-season finale.
COLLEGES
WOMEN’S SOCCER: Kate Evans and Anetra Byfield scored goals 26 seconds apart midway through the first half to lift the University of Maine to a 2-0 victory over LIU Brooklyn in their season opener in Brooklyn.
