Nobody can express themselves quite like Hunter Pence
Hunter Pence, San Francisco Giants right fielder, is kind of a weird guy. If a spaghetti monster put on a baseball uniform, Hunter Pence is who you’d get. But no matter what you think of him, he’s always very much himself. Whether he’s making a catch on his back like a turtle, or right in the middle of an at-bat, Hunter Pence can’t be anyone but Hunter Pence.
Hunter Pence demonstrated the incredible Hunter Pence-ness of his being on Thursday night when the Giants were playing the New York Mets. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Pence was batting with Buster Posey on second base. He saw two pitches from Mets’ hurler Jacob deGrom before he executed one of those wild Hunter Pence swings at pitch number three, an 82 mph curveball. He connected with the ball and sent it to left field, plating Posey for the Giants’ first run of the game.

But on the back end of his swing, Pence looked, um… Well, he had this face on, like… You know what? Just take a look. I captured three different shots of Pence’s back swing face, all of them crazier and more wonderful than the next.
That’s a surprise face. “Ooh, my favorite sneakers are on sale!” Or maybe “Hey! My pants just fell down!”
This face definitely has more of an eyes-open fear feeling to it. “I just ate a ghost pepper!!” Or my favorite: “MY HAIR IS ON FIRE!!”
To me, this face says “I WILL PUT OUT MY HAIR FIRE WITH MY MIND!!!” Hunter Pence really makes the best, best faces.
If you want to see all those faces in motion, MLB.com put together a gif of Pence’s amazingly expressive backswing.
Never change, Hunter Pence. Please don’t you ever, ever change.
