Duke suspends 2 players for first 3 games of season
Duke has suspended two defensive players.
Head coach David Cutcliffe announced Thursday night that safety Phillip Carter and defensive tackle Brandon Boyce will be held out for the Blue Devils’ first three games of the season — home games against N.C. Cental and Wake Forest and a road contest at Northwestern. No reason for the suspensions was given.

In a release, the program said the two “will continue to practice” throughout their suspensions.
Carter, a redshirt junior, was listed as a starter on the team’s preseason depth chart. He played in all 13 games in 2015, including two starts. He finished the season with 16 tackles, two tackles for loss and one interception. He also appeared in eight games in 2014 and registered two tackles.
Boyce was one of five true freshmen to earn a varsity letter in 2015. He saw action in every game and totaled 24 tackles, four tackles for loss and a sack.

The two are eligible to return for Duke’s Sept. 24 game at Notre Dame.
