Spencer Edwards, a former two-sport standout at Rockwall, has joined the North Texas football team.
Edwards was selected with the 88th overall pick in the 2012 Major League Baseball draft by the Tampa Bay Rays.
A UNT spokesman said Wednesday night that he would be added to the roster.
Edwards played center field and hit .210 in three minor league seasons.
UNT has enjoyed great success with walk-ons in the past and will now give a top former Dallas area baseball standout a chance to play football.
