Robert Griffin III reportedly filing for divorce from wife of three years
Browns starting quarterback Robert Griffin III and his wife of three years are in the process of getting divorced, according to a report from Cleveland.com.
Mary Kay Cabot reports that Griffin and his wife, Rebecca Liddicoat, have been separated for the past few months and now Griffin is in the process of filing formal paperwork to make things official.
The past few months — and, really, past few years — have been tumultuous for Griffin. Drafted No. 2 overall in 2012 by the Washington Redskins, he played well enough his rookie season to win the NFL’s Rookie of the Year award and set himself up as savior of Washington football.
Things imploded after that, with Griffin suffering a torn ACL in the playoffs that season and never really recovering. Ultimately he was ousted as starter for Kirk Cousins and didn’t play a single down in 2015. The Redskins released him and he was picked up by the Browns this offseason.
Griffin impressed new coach Hue Jackson enough to win the starting job, although his initial appearance with the Browns was an up-and-down affair against the Packers.
Griffin was married in July of 2013 to Liddicoat, and the couple announced the birth of their first child in May of 2015.
The life of an NFL quarterback only makes the already difficult proposition of marriage even harder, with plenty of travel and even more stress. Russell Wilson, another young quarterback from the 2012 draft class, is already on his second marriage after the Seahawks announced Wilson’s divorce in April of 2014. Wilson is now remarried to singer Ciara.
According to Cabot, it “has been a difficult time” for Griffin, but his Browns teammates have been informed of what’s happening in his personal life, and “have been supportive.”
“He’s chill. He’s real relaxed. He Facetimes his daughter a lot,” said Browns receiver Terrelle Pryor. “He’s a family guy. He’s a teammate first, he’s awesome.”
