Rio Olympics: Manu Ginobili, Andres Nocioni calling it quits for Argentina
Following a 105-78 defeat by the hands of Team USA, Argentina was forced to say goodbye to two legendary figures in its basketball history. Andres Nocioni, 36, and Manu Ginobili, 38, informed the media that this was their final game for the Argentina National Team.
They were both part of the golden era of basketball for their South American country, which included winning the gold medal in the 2004 Olympics in Athens. After defeating Team USA in the semifinals of those Olympic games, Argentina closed out its gold medal campaign with an 84-69 victory over Italy. It was the first time since 1988 that the U.S. was denied the gold medal in basketball, and Argentina announced its presence on the world stage with incredible authority by securing gold in 2004. They’d medal again in 2008 with a bronze medal and just missed out on a second straight bronze in 2012 by finishing fourth in London.
Ginobili is hands down the greatest player in Argentina history — even more so that Luis Scola, who has often been its go-to scorer in these international tournaments. Manu has been able to lead his country to victory so many times and leave the opponent worried that mistakes would be capitalized on and losses would be incoming because of that.
Argentina coach Sergio Hernandez was emotional after the game because of how long he’s known Ginobili. And Nocioni was appreciative of his own accomplishments as a core member of this incredible group that was so good for so long.
Argentina Coach Sergio Hernandez on Ginobili’s last game for the team: “I’ve known him since he was a child. It’s a difficult day for me.”

Nocioni says it’s his last game 4 Argentina, too: “I came from a small town-18,000 residents. To be among these giants, it’s unbelievable.”

Scola may be the next one who decides not to play anymore for Argentina. The 36-year old big man would be 40 if he decided to play in Tokyo in 2020, assuming Argentina is able to qualify for the tournament then. The next wave of young players for Argentina isn’t quite there and certainly seem unlikely to match the success this country has had on the world stage.
Ginobili is still playing for the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA while Nocioni plays for Real Madrid in Spain.
