It looks like Trae Young will not wait until the spring to make his decision.

In a recent interview with the Oklahoman, Young revealed that he’s planning a December commitment, though did make sure to add “but anything can happen.”

That’s key since November 9-16 is the early signing period, which means Young would be simply committing and not signing a national letter of intent.

Whenever Young decides, it’s almost certainly going to be either the Kentucky Wildcats or Oklahoma Sooners landing his pledge. UK has been viewed as the favorite for awhile,  and while I still believe they are, a lot of recruiting analysts think Oklahoma is in the lead.

Despite a mini run of picks for Oklahoma in the 247 Crystal Ball, UK is still in the lead with 40% of the picks, though the Sooners aren’t far behind at 30%.

247 national recruiting director Jerry Meyer is among those picking Oklahoma for the time being, though I’m hearing UK is still in the lead for Young, and a fall decision would seem to fall in line with that.

John Calipari has been making Young a priority for over a year now, something you don’t often see Cal do with future classes. He’s been pursuing Young as hard as he has any elite point guard at UK, which is why they’ve been in the lead for much of this recruitment.

But ever since Oklahoma made the Final Four this year, Lon Kruger and his staff have been able to break through in this recruitment and actually get Young to strongly consider staying home for college.

If this recruitment were to go into the spring, that would be a bad sign for UK as it gives Oklahoma more time to push ahead, but the sooner Young decides, the better UK feels about landing him.

Along with the recent Oklahoma chatter, there was a growing belief that Young would wait until the spring to make his decision, so now that he said he’s planning to make one this fall, I’d expect the UK ‘momentum’ to resurface.
