Jerry Jones on why Cowboys don't need Johnny Manziel: Dak Prescott
Remember when Jerry Jones said he was “this close” to drafting Johnny Manziel back in 2014? Or, three months ago, when he conceded that he should have overpaid to trade up and grab Paxton Lynch? The Broncos landed Lynch and the Cowboys had to “settle” for Dak Prescott in Round 4.
Funny story: Prescott was lights out in his preseason debut, finishing 10 of 12 for 139 yards and 2 touchdowns, including this gem:
The performance was apparently enough for Jones, who seems quite pleased with the team’s decision to take Prescott. TMZ caught up with the Cowboys owner and general manager outside of Nice Guy in Los Angeles, after the team’s preseason opener against the Rams. And, naturally, Manziel’s name came up.
TMZ: What is it about Johnny Manziel that you guys don’t want him on the team?
Jones: Dak Prescott.
And later, as Jones was leaving, he was asked about his role in bringing the Rams back to LA.
TMZ: Is it safe to say that you take credit for the Rams getting here to LA?
Jones: Oh, don’t say that. We’ve got many owners that were involved in this decision, and let me tell you, I’ll take credit for the great job [Rams owner] Stan Kroenke is doing, gonna do, and I’m so proud the NFL is back in LA.
Jones said last week, following a Cowboys’ scrimmage, that he was pleasantly surprised by both Prescott and 2015 undrafted free agent Jameill Showers.
“I’m more encouraged after this about holding our pat hand on a veteran than before this,” Jones said. “As we go along and if we continue to see this kind of improvement and this kind of instinctive play, I can really get comfortable back there.
“Both of those guys played well. It was what you wanted to see. They looked comfortable and they reacted well when you got a little pressure. It was a good outing. It was good for everyone to see. To me that was one of the pluses.”
