What to watch for in the Broncos' first preseason game: Nick's Picks – FOX31 Denver
DENVER — The Broncos play their first game since winning Super Bowl 50 with a preseason match-up in Chicago Thursday night.
Here’s watch to watch for in the game as the team ramps up to the season opener on Sept. 8.
1. Quarterback Play: Mark Sanchez draws the start and is the current front runner to win the job over Trevor Siemian.
I do expect it to stay that way on up to the season opener against Carolina but there still remains some things that Gary Kubiak wants to see over the next couple of weeks before announcing that decision.
More important than squeezing in tight throws or hitting long completions for Sanchez tonight is to display total command of the offense and consistently put the Broncos into the best plays for the situation that presents itself.
Also I’m really curious how the rookie Paxton Lynch will look in the second half of this game. Command in the huddle, grasp of the playbook and his footwork are all things Lynch is working on as the 22-year-old continues his transition from a spread offense in college (Memphis) to the NFL.
2. Book It? Is running back Devontae Booker the real deal?
If the rookie out of the University of Utah is as good as advertised he could push to take Ronnie Hillman’s spot this year and also vulture away some of C.J. Anderson’s carries as well.
3. Wide Receiver Depth: Behind Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders who will step up to be the number three wideout?
Gary Kubiak called this the deepest wide receiving group he’s ever had in a single training camp.
Whether it’s Bennie Fowler, Jordan Norwood, Cody Latimer, Khalif Raymond Jordan Taylor or Mose Frazier someone is likely going to step up to create separation that race of talented wide outs.
