2016 Olympics TV schedule, Day 5 viewer's guide (Aug. 10)
Michael Phelps returns to the pool after an emotional win in the 200-meter butterfly, and the all-stars of Team USA basketball return to the court. Check out what else is scheduled for today.
Morning slots:
If you’re up at 7:30 am ET, turn on a pot of coffee and watch the women’s cycling road race time trial. The United States is sending defending gold medalist Kristin Armstrong, who will be looking to win her third consecutive medal in the event. USA teammate Evelyn Stevens will also be a contender to medal.
At 10 a.m. ET on NBC, U.S. beach volleyball tandem Casey Patterson and Jake Gibb look to continue their strong group play against Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira of Spain. Also on NBC during the morning slot is U.S. men’s water polo, which will be looking to turn its tournament around after two losses in group play. The Americans face off against France.
If you want something a little different, tune into the USA network at 10 a.m. ET where women’s handball will be featuring Brazil and Spain. Also playing will be the individual archery elimination rounds.
Afternoon slots:
Get your second look at USA men’s rugby sevens against Fiji at noon ET on the USA Network. The U.S. boasts two of the most electrifying wings in tournament in Carlin Isles and Perry Baker. After that finishes up, turn to NBCSN, where you’ll be able to catch men’s individual saber. Worlds silver medalist Daryl Homer will attempt to join USA teammate Alexander Massialas as a medalist at these Olympics.
Keep it on NBCSN at 2:30 p.m. ET to watch the U.S. women’s basketball team take on Serbia in group play. If the U.S. is running away with the game — which, let’s be honest, is a real possibility — switch over to NBC’s daytime coverage. American Michal Smolen will be fighting fast-moving whitewater in the K-1 medal round, where he could get on the podium.
Switch over to NBCSN at 4:15 p.m. ET to finish out the afternoon coverage with the U.S. facing off against Japan in women’s field hockey. This will be Team USA’s third group play game; it has surprised a lot of experts with a 2-0 record, winning against the No. 2 and No. 3 teams in the world.
Primetime slots:
Team USA men’s basketball is back in action on NBCSN at 6 p.m. ET against Australia. They’ll see familiar faces like Andrew Bogut and Patty Mills on the other side of the court. The USA men are winning games by an average margin of 50.5 points.
Next, primetime coverage of the Olympics begins at 8 p.m. American beach volleyball duo Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross look to continue their dominant play in group action against Swiss pair Anouk Verge-Depre and Isabelle Forrer. If that game is getting out of hand, switch over to NBCSN, which will be covering the men’s saber finals around 8:30 p.m. ET.
Swimming continues on NBC, where American Nathan Adrian will be looking to add another gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle final. Adrian won the event last year, and will be battling it out with Australia’s Cameron McEvoy.
U.S. swimming stars Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte will be swimming the 200-meter Individual Medley semifinal round. Finishing off swimming coverage will be the 4×200-meter relay, featuring breakout star Katie Ledecky.
Ending the primetime slot on NBC will the men’s individual all-around gymnastics competition featuring one of the great gymnasts of all time in Kohei Uchimura. The United States will be sending Sam Mikulak to attempt to podium in the event, but don’t expect him to catch Uchimura.
If you are still standing after all the primetime action, NBC will have men’s synchronized springboard diving as a nightcap at 12:35 a.m. ET. The United States team of Michael Hixon and Sam Dorman will be looking to knock off Team China, who has dominated this competition in recent years.
