Marshall is taking an added measure when it comes to the safety of its linemen during preseason camp. A story from the Charleston Gazette-Mail details Marshall linemen using helmets with additional padding on the exterior in efforts to reduce the trauma from head-to-head contact that often comes in the trenches.
“Those linemen, there’s so much contact every play with those guys,” head coach Doc Holliday said.
Other schools, including Syracuse, Toledo and Iowa State also use the helmets. We’ll see if more teams follow suit in the coming years. Reaction from MU players has been positive thus far.
