Giancarlo Stanton's immense power isn't limited to his at-bats
It’s no surprise that Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton is a strong man. He proves that pretty much every day with his light tower power and propensity to hit moonshot home runs.
Due to his offensive highlights, it’s easy to forget that Stanton’s power and strength doesn’t just magically disappear when he’s not at the plate. He proved as much during Monday’s game against the San Francisco Giants, uncorking a tremendous throw to nab Brandon Crawford at the plate.
In the top of the fourth inning, Giants pitcher Johnny Cueto stepped to the plate with men on first and second looking to give his club the lead. On the 1-0 pitch, Cueto hit a grounder to right, past a diving Dee Gordon.
Stanton, who was already playing in due to the fact that the pitcher was up, charged the ball, scooped in into his glove and came up firing home. He unleashed a line shot, easily nailing Crawford by a couple steps. It may have technically been a play at the plate, but it wasn’t even close.

It wasn’t a particularly long throw, and you could argue Crawford never should have been sent, but it was still impressive. According to the Statcast data, Stanton reached 93.6 mph with the throw. Sure, he was already charging in and had momentum, but that’s still pretty darn good!
More than anything, the highlight serves as a reminder that Stanton isn’t just a one dimensional slugger. That power and strength he shows at the plate … that carries over to everything else he does. We get so caught up in watching him hit dingers that sometimes we forget that.
Maybe that’s what happened to the Giants here. How else can you explain sending Crawford on that shallow grounder?
