David Ortiz uses day off to photobomb reporter, meet Vin Scully
Sometimes it seems like David Ortiz is ageless. He’s 40 and he’s still hitting homers like he’s in his early 20s. But even Big Papi needs a day off from the Red Sox lineup every now and then, and he got one on Sunday when the Sox faced the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. But as you might suspect, he didn’t actually take the day off to rest. He had other things to do.
First, he photobombed NESN reporter Guerin Austin, who was doing her job and reporting from the visitors dugout. She first talked about Hanley Ramirez being out of the lineup before moving on to Big Papi and why he wasn’t playing on Sunday. She had no idea that the man himself was actually behind her. And he wasn’t just behind her, he was bopping back and forth while Austin was explaining that Big Papi had woken up sore, but was available to pinch hit after treatment. Yeah, I think his dancing showed everyone he was available to pinch hit.
Austin had no idea that Big Papi was having a dance party behind her, but she had a good laugh when the guys in the Red Sox broadcast booth told her.

That wasn’t the only thing that happened during Big Papi’s day off (coming soon to a theater near you). He got a chance to sit down and talk to another future retiree, legendary Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully. When they shook hands, Scully told Ortiz how much he respects and likes him, and if there’s a better way for Vin Scully to start a conversation with you, I don’t know it.
The best part was when they both shared their memories of playing baseball as young’uns. Scully and his friends would try to hit bottle caps with broom handles. Ortiz had that topped, though. He used the heads of his sister’s dolls to play ball. (Apparently his sister is still mad at him for that. As a former doll-haver, I can’t blame her.)
So on Sunday, David Ortiz did a dancing photobomb on live TV and hung with Vin Scully. For most people, that would be the best day ever. But for Big Papi, that’s just a day off.
