Louisville CB to miss season after foot wound from drive-by shooting
Louisville coach Bobby Petrino said Saturday that cornerback Cornelius Sturghill would miss the entire 2016 season.
Sturghill, a redshirt sophomore, suffered a gunshot wound to his foot in a drive-by shooting in Memphis.
“He was walking down the street,” Petrino said via the Louisville Courier-Journal. “There was a drive-by shooting, and he took off and ran. He all the sudden fell to the ground, and there was a bullet that hit his foot.”

Sturghill is a native of Memphis. He has had surgery to repair a bone in his foot injured in the shooting.
“It’s a really sad deal,” Petrino said. “He wasn’t going to go home, then he decided to go home. It’s the timing of life sometimes, I guess. It’s really a shame for him because he’s worked so hard.”
Sturghill played in seven games in 2015 and had three punt returns as a redshirt freshman. He came to Louisville as a wide receiver but switched positions once he was on campus. Since he’s already used his redshirt season he can apply for a waiver from the NCAA for a medical redshirt for 2016.
