Bartolo Colon surprised to see A-Rod not in lineup, calls him his 'dad'
For the 10th time in the last 11 games, Alex Rodriguez was not in the starting lineup for the Yankees on Thursday. He’s been reduced to part-time player status due to his lack of production in 2016.
Thursday night’s benching was a tad surprising because A-Rod has phenomenal career numbers against Mets starter Bartolo Colon. He’s a career .411/.429/1.000 hitter with eight homers in 63 plate appearances against Colon. Heck, A-Rod had a three homer game against Bartolo back in 2005:
And yet, Rodriguez was not in Thursday’s lineup against Colon. Young Gary Sanchez got the start at DH instead and went 2 for 4 with a double. A-Rod did not even pinch-hit with the tying run on base in the ninth inning.
After the game, Colon told reporters he was surprised to see A-Rod out of the lineup Thursday because he hits him so well. From Anthony McCarron of the New York Daily News:
“I was surprised not to see him because we all know that he’s always hit well against me. I mean, I say that’s my dad.”
His dad! That’s not quite as good as Pedro Martinez saying you could “call the Yankees my daddy” back in the day, but it gets the point across. A-Rod has historically crushed Colon and he still wasn’t in the lineup.
To be fair, A-Rod and Colon have not faced each other since 2012. They’ve faced each other only six times since 2007. Most of that damage happened from 2000-05, when both Rodriguez and Colon were very different players than they are now. I’m not sure why those numbers would be relevant when filling out a lineup card in 2016.
