– Whenever the Phillies face a lefty, it’s worth considering Darin Ruf (1.029 OPS vs. LHP this year), Cesar Hernandez (.886) and Maikel Franco (.841). All three, plus whoever catches, be it Cameron Rupp (.911) or Carlos Ruiz (1.090), are in play against Felix Doubront. Don’t worry about Ryan Howard (.484) or Ben Revere (.572).
– Hanley Ramirez is 8-for-19 with a doubles in his career against Jeff Samardzija.
– The Blue Jays are facing a lefty (Adam Morgan), which means Josh Donaldson (1.051 OPS vs. LHP this year), Troy Tulowitzki (.986), Chris Colabello (.965), Russell Martin (.929), Devon Travis (.920), Danny Valencia (.836), and Jose Bautista (.827) are great options.
– Ryan Braun is 9-for-25 with a double, triple and homer lifetime against Matt Cain.
– Julio Teheran has allowed a .306/.390/.476 line to lefties this year, so Chris Davis, Jimmy Paredes, and Matt Wieters are looking better than usual today.
– Adam LaRoche (.458 OPS vs. LHP this year), Adam Eaton (.542), Alexei Ramirez (.605), and Melky Cabrera (.609) are all basically useless against lefties, even Wade Miley.
– The Yankees are facing lefty Martin Perez today, so fire up Chris Young (1.122 OPS vs. LHP this year) and Alex Rodriguez (1.008). Mark Teixeira (.823) and Brett Gardner (.805) are decent options, too.
– Matt Holliday is 15-for-39 with four extra-base hits in his career against Mike Leake. Teammates Jason Heyward (0-for-13) and Jhonny Peralta (2-for-17, six Ks) haven’t fared nearly as well.
– Carlos Correa (.942 OPS vs. LHP this year) and Jose Altuve (.924) have killed lefties this year, so they should be able to put up stats against C.J. Wilson. If you’re really looking for value, try Marwin Gonzalez (.847). Luis Valbuena (.607), Jason Castro (.567), Jake Marisnick (.526), and Preston Tucker (.449) will likely be nonfactors.
– James Shields (.285/.367/.537) has been knocked around by lefties this season, so give Lucas Duda, Daniel Murphy, and Michael Conforto bumps in value. Curtis Granderson would also be in this group, but he’s just 7-for-61 with 14 Ks lifetime against Shields.
– It’s a small sample, but Wily Peralta has also struggled against lefties this year (.299/.353/.547). Brandon Crawford, Brandon Belt, Joe Panik, and Angel Pagan make for solid options.
– Jaime Garcia‘s return is good news for Todd Frazier, who’s ripped lefties this year (1.022 OPS). Marlon Byrd (.892) and Joey Votto (.841) have also hit lefties well. Brandon Phillips has hit Garcia hard in his career (13-for-41, four doubles, two homers), so he’s worth a look, too.
– If you’re looking for a cheap catcher today, go with Oakland’s Josh Phegley, who has a .919 OPS vs. LHP this year. Phegley, Ben Zobrist (.866), Brett Lawrie (.850) and Billy Burns (.326 average, .373 OBP) are all good plays against Brett Anderson.
– Prince Fielder is about the only Ranger who’s hit well against lefties this year (.841 OPS), but there’s no real reason to be scared of any Texas player against Chris Capuano.
– A lefty for the Cubs (Yohan Flande) means Anthony Rizzo (.927 OPS vs. LHPs this year) has legit value as a reverse-platoon-split sleeper. Kris Bryant (.851) and Dexter Fowler (.810) are also solid plays, but be careful with Starlin Castro, Addison Russell, and Kyle Schwarber, all of whom have sub-.620 OPS’s vs. LHPs this year.
