– David Ortiz is 10-for-27 with four doubles and two homers lifetime against Justin Verlander. Teammate Dustin Pedroia is just 1-for-18 against Verlander, but take that stat with a grain salt, as Verlander clearly isn’t the same pitcher he used to be when he was dominating hitters.
– Mike Aviles (10-for-23) and Michael Brantley (11-for-23, four extra-base hits) have both had success in their careers against Jose Quintana. Teammates Giovanny Urshela (.940 OPS vs. LHP this year) and Ryan Raburn (.940) are also nice under-the-radar plays.
– Kole Calhoun (9-for-19, four XBHs), Albert Pujols (9-for-20, three HRs) and Mike Trout (9-for-24, four XBHs) have all hit Colby Lewis hard in their careers.
– Billy Butler is 14-for-33 with three homers lifetime against Jake Peavy.
– Jose Bautista (7-for-23, two homers) is about the only Blue Jay who’s had success against Felix Hernandez. Teammate Russell Martin (3-for-23, nine Ks) has been especially bad.
– Jose Abreu (9-for-25, two doubles, two homers), Melky Cabrera (7-for-15, double, triple), and Adam Eaton (6-for-23, three doubles, two triples) have all hit the ball relatively hard against Corey Kluber.
– With Jon Lester on the mound today, the Phillies offer several lefty-killing options, including Darin Ruff (.982 OPS vs. LHP this year), Maikel Franco (.892), and Cesar Hernandez (.854). Also, whoever catches, be it Carlos Ruiz or Cameron Rupp, is a legit option, as both sport OPS’s north of 1.000 vs. lefties this year.
– Jerome Williams has some pretty harsh reverse-platoon splits this year, with righties hitting .344/.376/.612 against him. No one is a bad play against Williams, but give Kris Bryant and Jorge Soler a little extra value.
– Evan Longoria is 15-for-40 with six homers and three doubles in his career against Chris Tillman. Tillman has also been hit harder by righties (.281/.355/.523) in general this year, so give an extra look to Steven Souza Jr.
– Bryce Harper is always a good play, but his lefty splits (1.068 OPS) give him added value today against Jeff Locke. Teammate Clint Robinson (1.045 in just 22 plate appearances) could be another sneaky option if he’s in the lineup.
– Lorenzo Cain (1.035 OPS vs. LHP this year) is a great play against new Astro Scott Kazmir, but steer clear of Jarrod Dyson (.612).
– The Dodgers offer a couple deep sleepers against lefty Jon Niese: infielder Kike Hernandez (1.096 OPS vs. LHP this year) and outfielder Scott Van Slyke (.946). Of course, Yasiel Puig (.881) is always a good play against southpaws, too.
– Lefties have killed Jeremy Guthrie this year (.329/.395/.531), which gives Preston Tucker, Luis Valbuena, Jon Singleton, Colby Rasmus, and Jason Castro more value today.
– Zack Greinke‘s paternity leave is Wilmer Flores‘ gain, as the Dodgers will send lefty Ian Thomas to the hill in place of Greinke. Flores has a solid .834 OPS vs. LHPs this year. As always when the Mets face a lefty, don’t expect anything from Curtis Granderson (.350) or Daniel Murphy (.437).
– The Braves are set to face rookie southpaw Tim Cooney, so fire up Juan Uribe (.958 OPS vs. LHP this year) and Chris Johnson (.813) if either is in the lineup. Avoid Andrelton Simmons (.389) and Jace Peterson (.525).
– Matt Holliday (.919 OPS vs. LHP this year), Jhonny Peralta (.813) and Randall Grichuk (.808) get bumps in value against lefty Manny Banuelos.
– Eddie Butler hasn’t been particularly good against anyone, but lefties have really had their way with him (.327/.436/.523). Expect Joey Votto and Jay Bruce to enjoy their time in Denver on Friday.
– Ryan Braun (.895 OPS vs. LHP this year) and Gerardo Parra (.836) have both had success against lefties this year, so give them a look against Patrick Corbin.
– Andrew Cashner has been hit hard by lefties this year (.284/.367/.529), so Christian Yelich, Justin Bour, and Derek Dietrich are legit options today.
– Drew Hutchison has some surprising reverse-platoon splits this year against righties (.328/.381/.503). The Mariners usually trot out a bunch of lefties, so while other DFS owners are loading up on those guys, you might score with lesser-owned players like Nelson Cruz, Austin Jackson, and Mark Trumbo.
