Tempers flare after Jose Fernandez inadvertently plunks David Peralta in the head
There was a scary moment on Wednesday night in Arizona when Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez beaned Diamondbacks hitter David Peralta in the head. The incident took place in the bottom of the sixth inning with the Marlins leading 5-2. Fernandez tried to go up-and-in on Peralta but instead got him square in the head, sending Peralta to the ground.
As you can see from the video, it was totally unintentional and Fernandez reacts with genuine shock, horror, and concern. Thankfully, Peralta got up on his own and walked off the field. The Diamondbacks reported he is just day-to-day.
Fernandez made it very clear to reporters after the game that it was an accident.
“I’m sad, sad because I know the kid personally, Number 1,” said Fernandez, who appeared to be shaken up about the beaning after the game. “And Number 2, you never want to hit anybody and you never want to hit anybody in the head, that’s the last thing you want to do as a pitcher. It’s really scary, I got really scared because that’s not something nice to see.”
So a pitch gets away from Fernandez, it’s a scary moment but Peralta is, for the most part, all right. End of story, right? Unfortunately not, not when the Diamondbacks are involved.
While Peralta was on the ground being attended to, Diamondbacks hitting coach Turner Ward started arguing with home-plate umpire Vic Carapazza. Carapazza eventually ejected Ward. Then in the very next inning, D-backs pitcher Dominic Leone went inside on the Marlins’ first batter, Christian Yelich, hitting him on the leg. Leone was immediately ejected for the retaliation.
The Diamondbacks have developed a bit of a reputation for these kinds of antics. Thankfully cooler heads prevailed and the Marlins held on for a 5-3 win.
