Jordan Spieth took a drink from Zach Johnson’s Claret Jug
Hockey players have a superstition about not touching the Stanley Cup unless they’ve won it. Jordan Spieth, however, wasn’t spooked about getting his hands — and lips — on the British Open trophy he just missed out on winning.
Spieth and Open winner Zach Johnson flew home to the United States on the same private jet, and the two-time 2015 major winner got to take a drink from the Claret Jug. Johnson’s caddie, Damon Green, posted the picture to Facebook.
Despite the sting from the end of his chase of the single-season Grand Slam, Spieth remained at the Old Course to give his buddy a hug and congratulate him after winning his second major title.
While the Grand Slam dream is over, Spieth still has a chance to get his hands on an even bigger — at least in terms of literal size — trophy. Spieth is the favorite to win the PGA Championship and its Wanamaker trophy at Whistling Straits, which would make him only the third player to win three of four modern Grand Slam events in a single year, joining Ben Hogan in 1953 and Tiger Woods in 2000.
